UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI - COLUMBIA

MARK TWAIN RESIDENCE AND DINING CENTER RENOVATION | COLUMBIA, MISSOURI

Mark Twain Residence and Campus Dining Facility is a 105,000 square foot facility on the University of Missouri – Columbia campus. Built in 1963, the existing structure consists of a 7 story residential hall tower and single story dining facility connected by a common link. With a $14.5 million construction budget, the University commissioned Bozoian Group to re-skin the tower including new windows, design an addition for dining including exterior seating and totally remodel the entry and common areas including the MEPFP systems of the entire facility.

In addition to the renovation to the existing structure, over 10,000 square feet of additions were designed to facilitate the need for additional dining seating and infastructure, a lounge and a computer center. In the dining facility, the remodel included a private dining area, a “Grab and Go” for off-hour customers, exterior dining, an addition to accommodate additional seating, and a kitchen addition to accommodate deliveries from a semi truck.

The entry into the facility was configured to accommodate both residents and dining patrons. The residents’ common areas include a new lobby, lounges, control desk, mailroom, computing, conference rooms, music practice rooms, student kitchen, student laundry and vending areas. In the tower, the student rooms were remodeled including new finishes and suite bathrooms, and new lounges were incorporated to accommodate large and intimate study groups.

On the exterior, the new design created a new resident entry directly into the tower. Bozoian Group analyzed the existing ‘skin’ of the seven story residential tower. Thermal and moisture control as well as aesthetics were evaluated. A new back-ventilated system with terra cotta panels was designed to improve the energy usage by over 75%.
