SOUTHWEST MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY

STRONG HALL
SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI

This five-story, precast concrete building houses classrooms and departmental offices for Southwest Missouri State University.  Designed with a ā€œUā€ shaped configuration, the building form creates a natural exterior amphitheater.  A glass curtain wall serves as a backdrop to the amphitheater and enclosure for a four-story, interior atrium.  As the focal point of the building, the atrium provides students with a gathering space, a sense of orientation and vertical circulation.

The core of the building is a series of classrooms consisting of computer laboratories, distance learning class- rooms, seminar rooms, and tiered and level classrooms.  Departmental offices are located within the two wings on the upper floors.  The first floor wings house both television and radio studios.

Mechanical service for the building is located in the basement and on the fifth (mechanical) level.  Mechanical units are visually concealed under a 12/12 pitched, clay tile roof.

As project architect, Ms. Bozoian designed the exterior details and the interior circulation for Strong Hall. This project was produced for Hastings & Chivetta Architects, Inc. The construction cost was $17,800,000.
