McKENDREE UNIVERSITY
HOLMAN LIBRARY
LEBANON, ILLINOIS
Bozoian Group Architects was selected by McKendree University to provide conceptual design for the addition and renovation of Holman Library. The existing structure consists of a first and second floor and a lower level. The estimated $2,800,000 project adds 8,400 square feet to the 22,173 square foot structure.
The addition relates to the existing building by matching brick, roof slopes, eave lines, masonry opening sizes and shapes and overall building massing.
Holman Library’s first floor will provide students with access to ample resources. The circulation desk, reference librarian, technical services room and self checkout centers are clustered together near the entrance. Multimedia labs are positioned at the center of the first floor and are divided into two separate rooms. More resources located in the lower level include: special collections, periodicals, microfiche, government documents and a learning resource center. Ascending to the second floor, students will find shelves of books stretching across the area. For privacy, a writing center and several group study areas are housed inside closed off rooms. Students can find seating located throughout the floors for individual study.
The new addition to the library provides more space for books and resources, as well as a new café. The café is located within the new addition to allow access when the remainder of the library is closed. Seating is available both indoors and outdoors, where the area will overlook the campus’ main commons courtyard. The roof form and glass windows will be replicated to complement the existing structure. The glass windows stretch across the two stories, pouring natural light into both floors.
