ILLINOIS STATE UNIVERSITY
EAST CAMPUS RESIDENCE HALL
REHABILITATION PROJECT | NORMAL, ILLINOIS
Bozoian Group Architects was selected to remodel the East Campus Residence Hall complex at Illinois State University. Renovations and upgrades provided residents, staff and visiting faculty with hotelesque features, including a new entrance lobby and welcome center, information technology services [ITS], recreational services, conference rooms, offices and a renovated University Center for Learning Assistance [UCLA].
The East Campus Residence Hall Complex is comprised of three existing structures totaling 394,300 square feet. Two of the structures, Manchester Hall and Hewett Hall, are eighteen story residence towers. The third building, Vrooman Center, is a low rise building that links both of the residential towers and is utilized by the entire campus. Interior and exterior improvements were made throughout the entire complex including new MEPFP systems, storefront and curtainwall.
The remodel transformed Vrooman Center into a more welcoming learning center. With its unique concrete structure, structural glass was used in lieu of typical drywall partitions to create classrooms, offices, and meeting spaces. A large section of the main level floor was removed to incorporate a direct connection between the main and lower level providing an entry into the UCLA. The UCLA was developed to create an enriched learning environment that all students could utilize to further their academic success.
Improvements to the two residential towers consisted of reconfiguring the student living floors and the apartments for full-time staff, live-in staff and visiting faculty. The student floors were designed as suite and community floors. Each suite was completely renovated and reconfigured including new finishes and bathroom facilities.
